The Amilcar Model G, produced from 1925 to 1927 was the most popular touring model, having a similar 1100cc engine to the Sports CGS but with a slightly more sedate camshaft in an 8ft 6 inch chassis, this
being some 8 inches longer than the sports cars. Semi elliptic springs were fitted front and rear.
This car was exported when new to Australia probably as a 2 seat drophead, and the total restoration
and transformation was carried out there in the 1980s. The superb cloverleaf 3-seat torpedo bodywork,
reminiscent of the contemporary racing Delage was executed to a very high standard, with aluminium
panels on a wood frame, and entirely without filler. The superb seats are in the finest Howe Australian leather, with matching tan carpets and trim. The black paintwork is Glazerite two pack, which has stood
the test of time very well, and still looks superb.
The engine was built up by Ruggero Ginnanini, a celebrated Italian racing car designer, the basic Amilcar unit being adapted to use a Riley 9 crankshaft, with special grade aluminium Carello con rods and an
aluminium cylinder head by Comalco Aluminium of Australia where Ruggero was Head of Research.
All new main bearings in white metal, and new carriers were made, and pistons, valves and springs etc manufactured to suit, with a useful external oil filter using modern cartridges. The clutch and 3 speed
gearbox are standard. Thus all the problems of the original engine, in particular its propensity to boil have been resolved, and the car never overheats, even in Australia’s warmer climate.
The car was brought to this country in 2001 and later passed into the hands of its current enthusiast owner where it has formed part of a stable of interesting vintage sports cars all kept in immaculate condition and used for VSCC events, in this case often by his equally enthusiastic daughter.
Performance and handling are extremely good and reliability has been proved by constant gentle use.
A magnificent sporting Amilcar possibly the prettiest in the world, with sensible modifications to improve
its usability, offering reliable and exciting motoring, and great potential in vintage competition.
