Estimate £10,000-£12,000Austins have always been renowned for their reliability and the quality of the materials from which they were built. The four cylinder 7 hp, 12 hp and 20 hp models had served them well through the early vintage years. However, in 1926 a new six-cylinder engine for the 20 hp was announced. This was followed in 1927 by an entirely new six-cylinder car, the 16/6 to fill the gap between the 12 hp and the 20 hp.
The new car followed general Austin thinking and to quote R. J. Wyatt in his book The Austin 1905 – 1952 ‘As expected, it was a superb monobloc engine, with an eight-bearing crankshaft, of 2,246 cc (15.9 hp) with a bore and stroke of 65.5mm x 111mm, and it lead the Austin range away from the magneto by using a coil-ignition system. It developed 40bhp at 2,400rpm and with a slightly modified Austin 12 gearbox was capable of speeds in excess of 60mph giving 24mpg at normal speeds, and 20mpg when driven hard.’
UK 7573 was first registered on 31st July 1929 and has been owned by the current owner since 1978. During that time a new, ash framed, professionally built body was fitted. In 1995 the engine was completely rebuild by a professional engineer to a high standard. The crankshaft was reground. All bearings where white metalled, cylinder liners fitted together with new pistons, new valves and guides, con rods were crack tested etc. Oil pressure is now in excess of 20 psi which is as quoted in the Handbook.
Five years ago the car was reupholstered in grey leather, with red carpets, by a professional trimmer. The hood, tonneau and side screens are as fitted thirty years ago.
UK 7573 has been in all year round use while in current ownership. It has been reliably used all over this country and in France for holidays. It has a VSCC Buff Form and has been used for occasional VSCC Navigation Rallies with modest success, including the Measham. It is taxed and insured with the current MOT certificate being issued in June. While not being concours it is a solid and reliable vintage car which drives well. The only reason for sale being the owners advancing years.
