‘Pa’ Austin always put a high value on competition, and was especially encouraged to do so by his son-in-law Captain Arthur Waite, and E.C. Gordon England, who both campaigned the Seven from its inception. It was the famous Ulster, however, developed from the ‘Super Sports’ which put Austin racing on the map. The model was highly successful in all types of competition, and was driven by all the famous names of the
period. The cars were available as a listed model, but not enough were produced to satisfy demand these days, and a thriving industry has been established for many years to produce these very desirable sports cars from the bones of their touring brethren. Some models are better than others, however, and the VSCC has now established very strict guidelines for acceptance, and all fiberglass bodied cars, for example are now banned.
RD 2119 is one of the best available examples of an acceptable Ulster replica, having an accurate aluminium body on a steel frame by ‘Compound Curvatures’, and has a VSCC buff form to allow entry to all suitable vintage events.
The result of a 3 year rebuild by an accomplished engineer, the car is now properly sorted, and has an MoT certificate and tax until 2011, and a V5C and green log book to safeguard its identity and period registration, and confirming first registration of the donor car as 25 Oct 1930.
The chassis is standard, unboxed and with a rebuilt 5.25:1 rear axle rebuilt by Chris Williams (Austineers) and with new half-shafts. The gearbox is a close-ratio 3 speed unit, believed to be genuine Ulster, (stamped S). The engine has been rebuilt and mildly tuned with large inlet valves, high-lift camshaft, extra capacity oil pump, new Rickardo alloy cylinder head and Bosch distributor with auto-advance. Springs are believed to be genuine Ulster, and the steering box is to Ulster specification, with correct steering radius arms etc, so no nasty wedges are required.
Braking is cable operated, coupled to all four wheels, with semi Girling adjusters at the front.
The instruments include a correct Smiths 0-100mph speedometer, rebuilt and recalibrated, an electric 0-6000rpm Smiths rev counter, and pressure gauges for oil and for the fuel system. 12 volt electrics are a sensible modification.
A set of 19 inch wheels are fitted with new 350 x 19 Blockley tyres, and pneumatic seat cushions, a 2 piece tonneau cover and a hood frame, but less hood, complete the picture. The body is attractively finished in bright red with black upholstery.
Altogether a most proper and well sorted Ulster replica, to a very accurate outline, and with all the correct special parts unique to the model, many of which are believed to be genuine items.
