1929 Delage DR 70
The Delage DR was introduced in 1928 to replace the long established 14/40 DI series which had been the mainstay of Delage production for many years. The DR models had sidevalve six cylinder engines of 2.2 or 2.5 litres capacity, and they were produced alongside the fabulous eight cylinder 4 litre D8 models from 1929.
The DR cars were finally replaced by the D6 models introduced in 1931, these being virtually a D8 less two cylinders.
The DR engine was a six cylinder sidevalve unit, with a cylinder head on Ricardo principles with a seven main bearing crankshaft. A dummy cover fits over the cylinder head, giving the appearance of an ohv unit. It is believed that the engine of this car is 70 x 109 mm bore and stroke giving a capacity of 2530 ccs, with a 4 speed gearbox and single plate clutch, with a torque tube to the rear axle. Certainly the chassis is to the normal very high Delage standard, with large finned brake drums and servo assistance; and equipped with Rudge Whitworth type knock-off wire wheels.
These cars had a long chassis enabling comfortable touring coachwork to be fitted, and the car on offer has the remains of a very stylish four seater sports tourer of typical French design of the period.
The rolling chassis is complete in all major respects; the engine, clutch etc are free, and no important parts are missing although carburettor, magneto and instruments will be required. The radiator is the correct type, and five road wheels are included, but the rear wheels require tyres.
Here is an excellent basis for a relatively straight forward restoration of a powerful vintage car of high quality, and with great potential. Although probably imported into the UK when new, there are no documents with the car, though it should be a simple procedure to register this Delage with DVLA.
