Isetta of Great Britain commenced manufacture of the 300 model under licence from BMW in 1957 in the former LB&SC Railway works in Brighton. The cars had right-hand drive, with the door hinged (with the steering column and controls) on the right. A single cylinder air cooled 4 stroke engine of 298ccs provided ample power for urban motoring in those far-off days before the motorways. The three speed and reverse gearbox would enable even James May to drive out of a garage.
This example, first registered on 25 July 1961 in Oxford is a standard tricycle, with sliding windows and folding sunshine roof. It has covered only some 5,000 miles since new, was last driven in 1967 and
purchased by the current owner in 1977, since when the little car has lived with the Morgan Plus 4 in dry but less than perfect storage. A few small parts were removed, but everything is with the car to enable a
straightforward restoration.
Production of these delightful and economical bubble cars ceased in 1962, as the arrival of modern
machinery such as the Mini had rendered these cycle-cars almost totally anachronistic, so this is a car from the last full sales year.
A green log book and V5c confirm the cars identity. A most attractive and now very rare machine which will provide enormous fun when completed.
