Edward Lyle established Star Engineering of Wolverhampton as an offshoot of his Star Cycle business, and the first car was produced in 1898. Early Stars were usually based on continental models, first Benz then De Dion and later Panhard. By 1904 all Star models had 4-cylinder engines on Mercedes lines from the 1743 cc 12 hp model offered here, up to the racing 8-litre 70 hp car, closely based on a Mercedes Sixty. The cars were expensive but very well constructed and become popular in Britain and the Empire; many such as this 1912 example being imported to Australia.

This little 12 hp 2-seater was returned to the UK around 2000 as a rolling chassis, and has since had the engine, gearbox and chassis rebuilt, with new hubs made to fit the wheels. As the original rear axle was incomplete, a 1911 axle was found and modified to suit, but further work is required. Many items required to complete the restoration are included, with a magneto, carburettor, manifolds, brake and gearchange controls being present. The body with seats, hood frame etc is almost complete. However a prop shaft, bonnet top, king pins etc are still required, and the wings seen with the car are fibreglass replicas.

A super little Edwardian car with a sensible sized 1743 cc 4-cylinder engine which can be completed without too many items needing to be sourced, and which would result in a rare and delightful participant in VSCC LC&E events.
