1930 Austin Seven Ulster Replica

The Austin Motor Company used the success of their Works Racing Team to generate publicity for the firm, and to develop a series of sports and racing cars based on the ‘Seven’. In 1928 the Super Sports model evolved into the fantastically successful ‘Ulster’ which became almost unbeatable in the 750cc class and was the only serious rival to the MG team in later years. There were never enough of those versatile little sports cars and a cottage industry has long been established to enable enthusiasts to convert tired saloons into sporting Ulster replicas.

SV 5096 is one such example, was completed by the current owner in 1994 and has been in use ever since. It is based on a correct 1930 short (6ft 3 inch) chassis, with tuned 2-bearing coil engine fitted with a 14 mm plug head, SU carburettor and 4-branch exhaust manifold, and mounting a well proportioned and correct looking fibreglass body by possibly the best manufacturer, Chris Gould, (No. CG 72). Other improvements carried out include Bowdenex Girling brakes and wider cast iron drums. The British Racing Green bodywork is set-off with black wings, and correct style windscreen, radiator stoneguard, quick release fuel filler cap, cockpit ‘hosepipe’ beading, outside exhaust with fishtail, bonnet strap etc. The cockpit is well finished and the car is properly equipped, with correct type headlamps etc, resulting in a very handsome appearance overall.This is a very useable vintage Ulster, not currently eligible for VSCC events because of its body construction, but acceptable everywhere else, in good running order, with an MoT certificate until September and taxed (free of charge) to the end of August.
