1928 Austin Seven Sports Special
Registration No. SV 6343 Chassis No. 55257
Engine No. M116292
Estimate: £9,000-£10,000 Hammer price:£ 9000
The Austin Seven in all its forms has always proved popular as a mount for vintage events and this has fostered a huge demand especially for pre 1930 VSCC eligible sporting 2-seaters suitable for all manner of competition. There has always been a good selection of parts available mainly from the large number of saloons produced, and some of these period specials, if properly designed and built, are very desirable. SV 6343 is one such device, being based on a mid 1928 chassis, with August 1930 engine, and a body designed and built by Austin Seven guru, Dave Tedham, on traditional lines, thus satisfying the eligibility team of the VSCC.
Construction was started in 2006, using appropriate parts, rebuilt and installed in the 1928 short chassis. The engine is in very good condition, with new pistons and rings, a skimmed 14 mm plug head (might not suit VSCC but can easily be changed), an SU carburettor on an alloy manifold, with a specially fabricated four-branch exhaust manifold and outside system. The petrol tank is located in the boot, and is specially made with filler pipe and quick release cap at the rear. Brakes have been completely renewed, a new radiator fitted and the car has been rewired with armoured cable, using new side and rear lamps and re-silvered headlamps. The suspension was rebuilt and the wheels have new tyres and tubes, including the spare which is housed in the boot.A useful feature of the design is that the scuttle panel is fitted with quick release fasteners to allow easy access to the rear of the instrument panel and dashboard etc.The very attractive body is a doorless pointed tail 2-seater with aero screens, a panelled boot and cycle type wings, constructed in aluminium, one of ten made to a similar design. With its increased power and light weight, this will make an effective competition car in suitable events. A lively and attractive sporting Austin Seven Special, ready for use, with a current MoT certificate valid until 16 Nov 2012, which can easily be made VSCC eligible at slight cost. |
