During the inter war period there was a great appetite for light delivery vehicles even smaller and cheaper than the Austin 7, Morris Minor, Jowett and Trojan vans available at the time, but larger than the ubiquitous tradesman’s cycles as remembered from David Jason in ‘Open all Hours’.
The Raleigh Super Seven was probably the best known and successful of these small commercial vehicles, and was a basic three wheeler, with single front wheel with girder forks on motorcycle lines, but with a steering wheel in lieu of handlebars. A large vee-twin engine, made for Raleigh by Sturmey-Archer
drives a conventional spiral bevel rear axle via a 3 speed and reverse gearbox with centre ball change. The rear suspension is by long semi elliptic springs.
CMC 324 was built in 1935, though the V5c accompanying the lot states date of first registration as 1st June 1984, which needs to be corrected. The engine is a 742cc 80 degree vee -twin, which has apparently been completely rebuilt and the chassis is basically complete, and sound but the body is removed for rebuilding.
An interesting project, which could be rebuilt in its present pick-up form (called a Light Open Lorry by the factory) or could be made into one of the light van models shown in the splendid colour catalogue which
accompanies the vehicle.
