1947 Sunbeam Talbot 2 Litre

The new Sunbeam-Talbot range was launched in 1939 after the Sunbeam-Talbot-Darracq combine had been taken over by the Rootes Group in 1935. The designs were based on Hillman and Humber models from the Rootes Group range, and some had previously been sold as Talbots. The range eventually consisted of 10 hp, 3 litre and 4 litre models, with a 2 litre being introduced in 1940 but produced only in very small numbers until after the war.
The 2 litre used a Hillman 14 hp engine, in a 10 hp chassis, lengthened in the bonnet to fit the larger power unit, but using the same very attractive body as the smaller car. The engine was a rugged, simple and strong four cylinder sidevalve unit, also shared later with the Humber Hawk, and by the end of production, in 1948 some 1124 cars had been produced. The 2-litre then evolved into the Sunbeam Talbot 90; the engine was now redesigned with overhead valves, and the styling updated, but still with a strong family resemblance, and these cars soon established a huge presence in the Rallying world, with a string of successes in the Monte Carlo, Alpine, Tulip and Austria rallies which included winning the Monte outright in 1955.
JGK 252 is a very original example of what is now quite a rare car, and was first registered in London on 24 April 1947.
The pearlescent gunmetal paintwork is believed to be mostly original, and the splendid grey hide interior, with fully stocked dashboard, and all correct fittings including working semaphore indicators and sunshine roof is certainly as it was in 1947. The four doors all shut beautifully and even the drivers door has not dropped at all. The rear side windows are frameless, as on the later 80 and 90 models. Updated sealed beam headlights are fitted, and the original twin Lucas windtone horns still adorn the base of the radiator.
The engine, a large four cylinder long stroke unit of vintage character pulls well, and uses no oil. A rebuilt Zenith carburettor with automatic choke gives good economy and reliability.
JGK 252 previously lived in the Oxford area before moving via Bristol to Southampton, and hence to Worcestershire. The present owner is a great enthusiast for these cars, with much experience of the various models and is an official of the Sunbeam-Talbot-Alpine register. The car is in current regular use, is taxed and has an MoT until Jan 2010 and comes with a handbook, parts list and some small tools. A good reliable example of a rare and very stylish model, the precursor of a range of successful rally cars, in amazingly original condition, and ready to drive anywhere in great comfort.
