This late 14/40 represents the final flowering not only of the model but also of the marque Vauxhall who by 1926 were in the process of a take over by General Motors which resulted in a very different type of car emerging from Luton.
If lot 620 is a totally real rebuilt example of an early 14/40, this car is in contrast being a completely
untouched and very late model of the same type, with all the desirable modifications incorporated from new.
William Pearson, a retired Merchant Marine engineer from Northwick, bought TU 4404 new, collected it from the works and drove it home to Cheshire. The car was greatly enjoyed and compared favourably by its owner to his friends Bentleys and Lagondas. After hostilities the car was extensively used for touring in the North-West and as a tender for model sailing yachts. In 1936 Mr Pearson built a new bungalow and the car was installed in the adjacent garage where it remained for many years. William died in 1963, but in
accordance with his wishes, his wife Doris continued to run and maintain the 14/40, so the car became a well known visitor to VSCC meetings at Shelsley, Prescott, Loton and Oulton Park, and Doris was still providing magnificent picnics in the car into the 1990s. The full story is told in more detail in a series of notes by the current custodian of this historic motor car, who has maintained her in such good order since 1976 and whose help enabled Doris Pearson to continue enjoying her picnics in the car for nearly 25 years.
The Pearson Vauxhall is still in eminently useable condition, and having never been restored or even
disturbed except for routine maintenance now shows signs of its 84 years continuous use. The wear is gentle, however and not the result of neglect or damage. This must be a unique car in that it is still substantially original as delivered in 1926, and still in one family ownership.
LM 3924 is currently taxed and has an MoT certificate, is in regular service, and will of course be driven to the auction from its Cheshire home.
